he's been a figure in california politics long enough that it's easy to forget the arc. born and raised in san francisco, he got his start the way a lot of ambitious young men did in that city — through relationships. willie brown, then the mayor, appointed him to a parking commission in 1996, then to the board of supervisors a year later. it sounds like a slow burn, but newsom moved fast. he was running the city as mayor by 2004, building a political identity around progressive causes — same-sex marriage licenses before they were legal, housing policy, the whole san francisco project — while also building a business empire through the PlumpJack Group, a collection of wineries, restaurants and hotels backed in part by gordon getty. he has never been a simple character. the idealism and the ambition and the money have always coexisted, sometimes uneasily.

which brings us to right now. earlier this month, newsom and his wife released four years of tax returns showing about $1.4 million in income for 2024. he framed it as a transparency move, a contrast with other political figures who haven't. the new york post called it a bait-and-switch, arguing the release was structured to obscure as much as it revealed. and that tension — between the gesture and the reality, between the progressive positioning and the personal wealth — is exactly what makes him such a charged figure at this particular moment. he's also doing this, notably, while a federal probe related to california governance is still in the background. the timing of the release was not accidental.

at the same time, he's been leaning hard into the worker-versus-corporation frame. california's minimum wage is heading well above the federal floor, and newsom has been vocal about it, explicitly criticizing the current federal administration for what he describes as indifference to working people. the politics here are not subtle. he's positioning california — and himself — as a counterweight, a proof of concept that you can govern progressively and still keep the lights on. whether you find that compelling or self-serving probably depends on what you already think of him.

there's also the podcast. *this is gavin newsom*, launched this year, pulling guests from across the political spectrum. it's a move that reads as either genuine intellectual curiosity or a very deliberate image-softening exercise ahead of 2028. probably both. he's always been good at that — at making the calculated feel personal.

the honest read on newsom right now is that he's in the uncomfortable middle stretch of a long play. not yet a declared candidate for anything, but clearly not done. the tax returns, the minimum wage speeches, the podcast — they form a coherent argument for a particular kind of democratic politics, one that's culturally combative and institutionally credible. whether the wealth and the positioning can stay in the same frame, or whether one eventually swallows the other, is the question that follows him everywhere he goes.
