dispatch
ron desantis is in one of the stranger positions in american politics right now — not quite a lame duck, not quite a kingmaker, but something in between, where the power is real and the horizon is complicated.
he came up through a particular kind of ambition. jacksonville-born, yale-educated, harvard law — the resume reads like a blueprint. he did a tour in the navy, served as a legal advisor to seal team one, was stationed at guantanamo, deployed to iraq. whatever you make of his politics, the biography has texture. he got into congress in 2012 as a founding member of the freedom caucus, built a relationship with trump early when it still required some nerve, and parlayed all of it into the florida governorship by the thinnest margin — four-tenths of a percentage point over andrew gillum in 2018. four years later he won by nearly twenty points. that's a different kind of politician.
and then the presidential run, which now feels like a long time ago even though it ended just last january. he announced in may 2023 with a lot of structural advantages — the money, the governing record, the idea that he could be trump without the legal exposure. it didn't hold. by january 2024 he was out and endorsing the man he'd implicitly been running against. that exit reshaped things. it left him as florida's governor with a term that ends in early 2027 and no obvious next move.
so what's he doing with the time. two things are worth paying attention to. he's been signing death warrants at a steady pace — recently approved the execution of harold gene lucas for a 1976 murder in lee county, the killing of a sixteen-year-old. advocacy groups are pushing back hard, arguing the case has serious problems. the other thing is the succession question, which he's not officially part of but is absolutely shaped by. byron donalds, with trump's backing, is emerging as the frontrunner for the republican gubernatorial nomination. the race to replace desantis is already organizing itself around trump's preferences rather than his. that's its own kind of commentary.
what makes desantis "it" in this particular moment isn't a single headline — it's the structural tension. he runs a large, genuinely complex state. he's still signing consequential legislation, still making executive decisions that have real stakes for real people. but the political conversation around him has already started moving into past tense, sorting him into legacy mode while he's still in office. there's something quietly unusual about that — a governor at the height of his formal power watching the field realign without him at the center.
the read on desantis has always required holding two things at once: the genuine capability and the particular choices he's made with it. that tension hasn't resolved. it's just operating on a slower frequency now, which might actually make it more interesting to watch.
